Liveblog: Amazon announces new Kindle Fires (some with HD), Paperwhite Kindles, and an insanely cheap data plan for tablets

Amazon made some HUGE announcements today. Want a Kindle? Starting any minute now you’ll be able to preorder the latest one for just $69.

Want a Kindle that looks like real paper and boasts an insanely high resolution display and a backlight? That’ll be a mere $119.

How bout a Kindle Fire? Yesterday, those went for $199. Today? $159, with improved processors and twice the RAM.

How about an HD Kindle Fire? For seven inches, and with 16GB of storage (twice the previous amount) only $199. The price of the old Kindle.

Want a bigger screen? Step up to the 8.9″ Kindle Fire HD with 16GB of RAM for only $299.

Want it all? An 8.9″ Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE and 32GB of storage? That’ll be $499 for the Kindle, or the same price as a 16GB WiFi-only iPad. The 4G LTE service goes for a mere $50 a year on top of that. Granted, it’s a smaller screen and lacks Apple’s ecosystem, but that’s an insane price.

Amazon really shook things up today.

Tech blog the Verge now reports that “An armored truck just pulled up outside” — what secrets will Apple be unveiling today that are so great they can only be kept inside an armored truck???

12.44

While we wait for the event to start, the best hint we have from Apple as to what might be announced today is the flier for the event. Do the colors symbolize the new, cheaper “iPhone 5C” coming in a whole bunch of bright, new, fun colors?

09.23

This event kicks off in a little over three hours! Tune back in at 10AM Pacific, 1PM Eastern time and we’ll get this party started!

$ 329 does not roll off the tongue

It will have trouble competing with the $ 199 Nexus 7 / $ 159 Kindle Fire.

Is that the price Apple wanted for this? To maintain their margins?

Or will be able to buy a cheaper ($ 299, perhaps) iPad mini next year?

– Idiot proof dock connector that works no matter which way you stick it in, called “Lightning” – adaptor for all your old devices to help you transition

13.56

Continuing:

– New form factor—4 inch, 16×9 screen to let you watch widescreen video without black borders
– The phone hasn’t gotten wider, just taller — main screen now fits an additional row of apps
– Better battery life than the iPhone 4S
– Despite all of this, the new iPhone 5 is the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever

13.54

They’re showing a video about the design, so let’s go over a few things. Our Small Biz Go Mobile wrapup if you will, while we wait for them to announce pricing and a release date.

– 4G LTE for super fast broadband speeds
– Improved camera that shoots 1080p video, with better low light and video performance and seamless sharing with family and friends via iCloud

Saw this rumor last night, guess it’s a big enough feature to announce. Which is strange, since a lot of the competition includes this in their native camera apps already, but Apple is adding a “panorama” feature to the iPhone 5

13.28

“To marry mobile with console graphics, it’s never been done before.” – Phill Schiller

13.28

Missed this earlier, so sneaking this in while they talk about games. it’s apparently a whole new screen tech in the new iPhone. Same retina quality as before, but better color saturation just like they did with the new iPad.

14.56

THis is Amazon’s own data plan.

250MB a month.
20GB of cloud storage.
$ 10 Amazon credit.

$ 50 per year.

I spend more than that every month on my phone.

Advertising subsidized Kindles was an experiment for Amazon a year ago, an attempt to see whether or not it would work.

Surprise surprise, people love low prices.

Here’s Amazon’s pricing lineup, it’s mighty impressive:
Kindle $ 69
Kindle Paperwhite $ 119
Kindle Fire 7″ $ 159
Kindle Fire HD 7″ $ 199
Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ $ 299

14.49

Why did Amazon spend so much time talking about ads? This is why.

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 2.49.24 PM

14.49

But you can preorder it today

14.49

The big boy, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ doesn’t ship until November 20th

14.48

The 7″ Kindle Fire HD is $ 199 and includes 16GB of storage

The 8.9″ Kindle Fire HD is $ 299 and comes with 16GB of storage as well

Not the best “academic” sources, but I guess it’s a start. If Amazon develops this feature further, with better content partners (like, I don’t know, real academic sources like journals?) it could be a huge hit.

For now, YouTube isn’t exactly the best place to learn.

14.44

Oh I get it. Not only is Jeff Bezos literally playing games with us, Amazon is expanding their advertising platform.

First it was just black and white ads on our Kindles while they slept.

Now it’s full color pop-up ads in games on Kindle Fire.

14.36

They’re demoing the Kindle Fire HD now. Looks like we’re going to have to wait a bit for pricing.

14.35

Is anyone else still freaked out by the tombstone image?

They transitioned straight from that into family.

14.34

Okay this is pretty innovative actually. Waking back up.

The parental controls on this device are way beyond what the competition is doing. Screen turns blue when kids are in “game mode” so you know how much time they’re wasting. You can set limits: what apps can the kids use, and how much time are they allowed to read each day vs. time spent watching movies?

For parents who like to limit these sorts of activities (and I’m sure glad my parents didn’t have this tech!), this may be the first tablet that’s truly acceptable to them.

Just tell us the price, Amazon.

14.27

3G (or, now and better, 4G LTE) is one of the top reasons my iPad is an invaluable tool

14.26

If Amazon is wasting this much time talking about WiFi, I guess there won’t be a 3G version?

Too bad :(

14.26

MIMO is apparently a fancy way of saying “the WiFi signal strength will be great”

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 2.25.59 PM

14.25

This will clearly not be an 8GB tablet

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 2.25.34 PM

14.24

They’re making a big deal out of the fact that WiFi is supposedly faster on that Kindle Fire HD than even the iPad 3

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 2.24.21 PM

14.24

Okay back to the display. Everything else is gravy, since the screen is clearly the focus of the new Kindle Fire HD.

8.9″ means it’s smaller than an iPad, but bigger than the 7″ Kindle Fire or the Google Nexus 7. So, a “medium” sized tablet.

But it’s full HD – 1920×1200 resolution means it can show the max resolution available for movies and games.

254 PPI is how dense the pixels are on screen. This is below the iPad 3’s retina 297 PPI, but still impressive.

14.22

Apparently this is what the new processor is like?

Yikes.

14.18

A laminated screen on the Kindle Fire HD should mean less glare

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 2.18.05 PM

14.17

Here’s a quick translation: IPS display technology is pretty much the best you can get consumer wise. Huge viewing angles. beautiful colors. Amazon is making the right choice here.

14.17

8.9″ — can we round that up to 9? — is the display size of the new Kindle Fire HD

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 2.16.38 PM

14.11

All 8 books will be $ 1.99, and you’ll get all of the installments at that price.

14.11

In this slide from Engadget, we can see all 8 books that will be part of the Kindle Serials launch.

14.10

Bezos was not kidding earlier when he talked about how the content is the most important thing. Amazon is continuing to innovate in the content space, coming up with new ways to deliver things to readers.

14.10

Now too, Kindle serials. Buy once, get all future episodes or chapters. New issues automatically added to your old ones, so you can pick up and continue reading from where you were!

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 2.09.41 PM

14.09

Now he’s discussing the gap between short articles we read, like on the web or in magazines, and full length books. The middle ground, apparently, is Kindle Singles—middle length texts to fill that gap.

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 2.08.21 PM

14.07

And now Bezos is back on stage. “We’ve got some of the Kindle Direct Publishing authors in the audience today, and I’d ask you to give them a huge round of applause.”

14.07

14.06

They’re showing a video highlighting some Kindle Direct Publishing success stories.

14.05

Of the top 100 books sold on Kindle, 27 of them come from Kindle Direct Publishing.

14.04

As an author myself, I’ve often thought about how cool it would be to have a book sold on the Kindle. Bezos is now speaking to people like me, apparently, as we transition into a discussion about Kindle Direct Publishing.

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 2.04.07 PM

14.03

The basic Kindle is getting some of these upgrades. Faster page turns, new fonts, lower price.

14.03

And the price drops keep coming! The basic Kindle is no loner $ 79 — they’re dropping that by $ 10 as well!

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 2.02.45 PM

14.01

As I predicted earlier, they’re keeping the $ 79 Kindle around at the low end.

Last year, we announced a Kindle. People liked that device so much that we decided we’d keep it.

14.00

The Kindle Paperwhite boasts a whole new generation of e-ink tech over the Nook Glowlight. It has a light as well, and a real touchscreen. It costs $ 10 less. Typical amazon.

14.00

I told you they’d find a way to bring prices even lower ;)

14.00

$ 119 – order today, ships Oct 1

13.59

So they didn’t make much of a mention of it, but they said “capacitive touch.” This means a REAL touchscreen, not the bizarre infrared stuff that e-Readers are using today. This means that things like typing and navigating on the e-ink display should finally feel a bit more normal

13.58

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 1.58.09 PM

13.58

Now THIS is a wild feature. Instead of just page numbers, the book now estimates how much time you have left to read! I wonder how well this works…

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 1.57.35 PM

13.57

What does the new display look like? Honestly, from what I’m seeing, exactly what Amazon says it does—Paper.

13.56

“We took some cues from the Kindle Fire. We put the device in cover mode. You can swipe through, look at all your content on the device, or switch to the cloud and see your entire library.”
-Jeff Bezos

13.56

The backlight apparently evenly lights across the entire display.

The rumors are true! Amazon is promising an 8 week battery life!

13.54

“Perfect in the bedroom, perfect in direct sunlight. People are going to love this device, and they’re going to love the light. In fact, they’re going to love it so much they’re going to leave it on all the time.”
      -Jeff Bezos

13.54

This is a huge step above and beyond other Kindles

13.53

25% more contrast. An amazing 212 pixels per inch.

The number of Amazon Prime movies available today is stunning compared to where the service was even a year ago.

A photo of the slide from Engadget shows that while Amazon was once the #1 place for people to buy real books (textbooks, novels, children’s books, etc.) it’s now a place people go for e-Books.

13.48

Bezos has a good point here. Many other cheap tablets don’t come with an ecosystem—sure, you can get generic content like Netflix and Hulu almost anywhere. But what about exclusives? The strength of Apple’s iPad is that you can buy and rent blockbuster movies and music so easily through iTunes. Amazon has long had books on lockdown, and Bezos points out that, “Our service includes 180,000 Kindle-exclusive books that you won’t find anywhere else.”

13.47

He’s moving into a discussion of things like Amazon Prime, Amazon Instant Video, and how the Kindle Fire comes with this kind of content preloaded.

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 1.46.59 PM

13.46

Bezos is talking about how customers don’t just want gadgets anymore. They want services.

13.46

Bezos reveals a core Amazon belief: “Customers are smart.”

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 1.45.46 PM

13.45

Bezos continues: “We. Love. To invent. We love to pioneer. We even love going down alleys that turn out to be blind alleys.”

13.45

Is this the spirit of Amazon? Packages on your doorstep? Pretty much captures a feeling of a new tech product “arriving”

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 1.44.23 PM

13.44

Says Bezos, “We’ve got a lot to share with you. I hope you enjoyed that new TV spot, and I hope it captures the spirit of Amazon.”

13.43

They’re showing the commercial again that we saw last night. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos is now taking the stage.

13.42

Okay sounds like things are getting underway!

13.41

Strangely, the old Kindle Keyboards are still in stock at Amazon. Isn’t it time for us to finally retire those devices? Who uses a keyboard on an e-Reader anyway?

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 1.40.25 PM

13.39

Or is it more likely we’ll see the higher end Kindle go even cheaper? The $ 79 basic Kindle is still being sold by Amazon as of right now, while the Kindle Touch, Kindle Touch 3G, and Kindle Fire are all ominously “out of stock”

13.38

Oops, looks like the liveblogging software is eating my dollar signs! The current low-end Kindle sells for $ 79, a full $ 20 lower than the B&N Nook. Can Amazon manage to push prices even lower today?

13.35

Amazon has a long history of undercutting the competition and bringing cheap products to market. The basic Kindle, for example, can be had for a mere , a full less than, say, a Barnes & Noble Nook. When the Kindle Fire came out last year at 9, it undercut the competition so much, many speculated Amazon had to be losing money on the product. It turned out, Amazon was just ahead of the game—this summer’s Google Nexus 7 proved that real tech from rivals could come out at that price point as well. Amazon is in a much more competitive environment now—Sony’s most recent e-Reader, the PRS-T2, boasted much faster page turns than Amazon’s offering and even offered social integration. Whether it’s just new Kindles & Fires or a phone, I’m expecting Amazon has found ways to push prices even lower than before, while still offering high quality products.

13.20

Sounds like everyone is being seated at the event in Santa Monica. We’ll soon know what new tech Amazon is bringing out.

13.16

Woman in hammock, holding a full-sized 10″ Kindle Fire? Amazon really gave a lot away in last night’s ad…

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 1.09.25 PM

13.07

This is funny–late last night, Kobo decided it was a good time to announce it’s new line of e-Readers. And when I say late, I mean late–we got the email at 2:49pm EDT! I guess they decided that anything they could do to announce before Amazon would be good business! This must mean they’re afraid Amazon has something huge up their sleeve, though…

13.04

The event starts at 10:30am PST in Santa Monica (1:30pm eastern) — we’ll continue to round up the rumors until things get underway!

13.01

Another still from last night’s Amazon ad, this would appear to show a new tablet—the latest 7″ Kindle Fire?

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 1.01.01 PM

13.00

Another picture of the supposed “Paperwhite” Kindle — the name refers to the fact that this Kindle’s screen, rather than being grey, is supposed to be a bright white, just like actual paper. Another rumor is that the actual resolution of the display (previously 800×600) is going to get a bump up as well. Both should make for a better reading experience.

Screen Shot 2012-09-06 at 12.58.49 PM

12.58

The Verge is calling an Amazon Phone “confirmed” — what will this be? A WiFi only phone with VoIP like Skype? Does Amazon have carrier deals made? I can’t wait to find out.
