1st National Water Trail equipped with Hi-Tech “Smart Buoys”

SANY0100.JPGToday, we went out on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland to witness the deployment of the 3rd and final "smart buoy". The buoys located in Jamestown VA, Point Lookout at the Potomac River and now at the mouth of the Patapsco river. These buoys will communicate wirelessly to help environmentalists, scientists and others like the Dept. of Natural Resources, keep tabs of the water quality and overall health of the Chesapeake Bay. These buoys also aid in navigation for boaters & fisherman and are envisioned to be utilized by tourists and by educators wanting to bring more interactivity into their classrooms.

SANY0088.JPGJohn Johnson of Verizon Wireless invited me to go out on the boat and see first-hand the smart buoy be deployed by the Army Core of Engineers. The buoy has a number you can call to get real-time updates on all types of information. Just call 877-BUOY-BAY (877-286-9229) or visit via the Web at www.buoybay.org
