In this segment we are broadcasting from CNN in NYC. We sit down with Soledad O’Brien to discuss her newest documentary for the CNN In America series. Her newest doc focuses on innovation, technology and entrepreneurship by following the story of 8 Black techies who leave their families behind to move to Silicon Valley for the summer to pursue their tech startup. We discuss the doc, what surprised her and how she answers to those who think focusing a special on Blacks is limiting.

Steve Jobs book covered with broken Microsoft Tags?

File this one under bizarre/ironic.

While at the bookstore yesterday picking up my copy of Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs, I decided to pick up the audiobook version too. And I’m talking about the unabridged, 20 CD version here.

Anyway, I’m checking out the packaging and what do I find?

A Microsoft Tag.

Some of you might not know what that is, so let me show you:

See that weird pink and yellow and black square on the book? That’s a Microsoft Tag, which is basically Microsoft’s branded and Internet-feature rich version of the QR code I love so much. Basically, you scan it with the tag app [get it here for iPhone or Android/Windows Phone/Blackberry] and it loads up a web page or rich contact info. My online editor Shy uses one on his business card—when you scan it, you can automatically add his info to your phone. So that’s pretty cool!

I’m thinking that a Microsoft Tag on the audiobook is sort of hilarious. I mean, how did it get there? Did the publisher ever stop to think that bestselling biography of the iconic Apple founder might not be the best place for a Microsoft-branded product?

But that’s not even half the story—check this out: This Microsoft Tag is broken.

When you try and scan it, you get taken to what looks like an excerpt of the book:

But when you try and hit play, THE WEBSITE IS BROKEN:

How did the publishers let this one slip through? Is this just Steve taking one last shot at Microsoft from beyond the grave?

Use technology to find quick cash!

Many of you know I’m on a mission to help people leverage technology to live better lives. So this past Saturday my segment on CNN was part of a 2-part series. Part 1 is all about helping people learn how to use technology to earn money. Part 2 (next week) I’ll deliver tips on how to use technology to pursue your passion profitably.

Many of you sent emails, tweeted or messaged me on FaceBook wanting the link to the video. So I jumped on it as fast as possible for you (see below). Thanks for tuning in and remember tune in or set your DVR, every Sat. 8:20-8:30am est for CNN’s Weekend Tech segment with myself and Mr. TJ Homes. And if you like, you can gather timely updates from me via twitter!

QR CODE watch & t-shirts to spread your message

QR codes are continuing to build alot of buzz. However, I am concerned that too many organizations are just slapping them on products and in-store signage without really thinking through their QR Code strategy. I’ve seen these codes send people to basic web pages not specific landing pages. I’ve even seen a qr code on a tv ad, seriously? I’ll never have enough time to scan that! For those who don’t know, these are simple barcodes that you can make easily for free online and then place anywhere. The codes can be scanned by mobile phones with free scanning apps. When a code is scanned it then initiates the action you programmed the code to deliver. You can do all sorts of things like send people to a specific web page, send them a text message, have them view a video etc…

Here’s my spin on QR codes, I had these t-shirts made way before people were used to seeing these codes, but now having worn it recently I’ve been scanned a few times and more and more people get it! Now, I’m not telling where my QR Coded shirts take you but let’s just say if you see me with this one, get to scanning because I hook you up with free gadgets and prizes :-) check my event calendar & catch me in the street – LOL!

My latest fun with QR codes is creating a QR code watch face – LOL. I know my boy BrothaTech also has his QR bling, a necklace.
