This morning I say down with Matt Lauer from the TODAY show to break down the Apple rumors and hype to talk about what we can expect from Apple’s iPhone 5 announcement. Want to know more? Check out the video above.
This Wednesday Sept. 12th, NYC will be buzzing! Specifically an event that we’ve been planning since June will finally be here! We have RSVP’s from celebs, internet stars, media, techies and major social influencers! The general public is also invited BUT for all of you on mobile video app socialcam, you get the VIP experience w/ access to all suites, even JayZ’s main suite!
If you are coming to the event here are my top 6 tips before you get there:
1. Dress to impress!Shorts and t-shirts are out! Flip-flops are for the beach! And sports gear is for Football Sunday! I’m not wearing a tie, but I plan to be in a blazer, sneakers and jeans! Ladies, you don’t need my help – you are smarter than us guys :-) Overall, I’m telling people sophisticated but comfortable. This is an upscale lounge, not your local pub :-)
<<<<<< This is an example of what NOT to look like
2. Be on time! Doors open at 7p. Don’t try to be cute and be fashionably late you might get your fashionably late-ass stuck outside :-) Remember this event is FREE and we already have a ton of RSVP’s, almost more than the capacity. So be in that line by 7p to ensure you get in! It’s a Weds nite, not the weekend and drinks are free starting at 7p. Don’t be that person in the back of the line!
3. Be social & use the official hashtag #PowerHouse4040! Get your Tweet, Instagram, Facebook, 4sq & Socialcam videos on! We’ll have a HUGE social media wall that anyone in the lounge can see, so use social and use that hashtag! Good twitter accounts to also follow that nite are: @TheRoxie @MarioArmstrong @WebGuyShy @NeverPowerless @Skulleeroz @MrMikeStreet @MCHammer @AnthonyQuintano
The best way to follow everything is #PowerHouse4040
4. Download the Socialcam mobile video appbefore you leave the house or office! This way you can shoot some videos and be enrolled in my tech contest. Those who shoot videos and in the title put the tag #PowerHouse4040 will be in the running for some free technology gadgets including 2 Duracell Powermat systems and more!
5. Have your Duracell Powermat Wireless Case on your phone so you can use the cool technology in the lounge. I’ll have 20% off discount codes soon.
6. Sync your phone! Make room to capture video & photos on your device! You don’t want to have that moment to take that awesome photo or shoot some video and your phone memory is full!
You do these 6 things & you’ll be setup perfectly for an awesome night, with awesome people! See you soon!

It’s almost here and we HAVE ALL BEEN working our tails off to have one of the most epic events of 2012! Join me, this Weds. Sept. 12th at JayZ’s lounge, that will be completely full of techies, entrepreneurs, internet & social media superstars, celebs and media!
To me the event is about 3 things:
1. A chance for you to use and see 1st hand the only venue in the country that has the Duracell Powermat wireless technology embedded into areas of the lounge. Have you seen the ads all over NYC? (see youtube video below) In the lounge, you lay your phone down with the Duracell Powermat case on it and it starts charging. Soon this will be in airports, restaurants, cars and more!
2. To celebrate the success and the social community of my favorite mobile video app Socialcam! The internet startup has grown phenomenally fast, it’s my main distribution point for sharing online video and we wanted to have a party to celebrate all the socialcammers out there! The socialcam app user base consists of quite a few known and up & coming celebs and influencers as well as some big brands that will be in attendance!
3. To get more dialogue going about the Power of Social Video with a lively panel discussion. Invited media will get to hear about trends from awesome panelists ranging from Facebook, Socialcams CEO Michael Siebel (who recently positioned 18 month old Socialcam to be acquired for $60 million), Socialcam star AJ McClean (Backstreet Boys), Duracell Powermat CEO and more. I’ll be the MC :-)
I hope you can join us! There will be food, drinks and awesome people – what else is there? The event RSVP’s have been pouring in and we have more RSVP’s then the place can hold. ! So if you plan to be there – SHOW UP EARLY – DOORS OPEN at 7pm. Don’t be fashionably late you may not get your fashionably-late-ass in the door! If I were you, be there by 7:15p!
If you have questions just send me a tweet @marioArmstrong – or send an email

This week, Shy and I point at golden statues in front of 30 Rock and then boil to death in a hotel room. We showcase three videos: one of drunk golfers, another of a kazoo-playing maniac, and the third of the world’s scariest sandwich artist. You read that right. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
On the TODAY show this morning, I talked to Al Roker about some ways that college students can save money while still having the latest and greatest tech. From smartphones to ultrabooks and everything in between, today’s students know what’s up. But college budgets don’t usually let you to splurge on every gadget that comes along. I’ve got some great tips on tech’ing out your dorm room and saving money along the way.
Try renting your textbooks
The biggest hit to the college student’s wallet always comes at the start of the semester. Maybe they’ve saved up a bit over the summer washing dishes, but those savings are quickly wiped out at the campus bookstore. Textbook prices are outrageous, but the greatest indignity always comes at the end of the semester when you’re faced with the choice of either selling your book back for a fraction of what you paid or keeping a 10 pound tome around that you never want to see again.
Enter Chegg, a new service that allows you to rent textbooks for a fraction of what you’d pay to buy them. We found that rental prices were often way, way less than what you’d pay to buy the textbook new, with discounts between 50-75% throughout the site.
Budget Televisions
Let’s face it, college students are the last people on earth who need top of the line television sets. But that doesn’t mean they have to suffer either. One very affordable set I like is the 24″ Toshiba 24SL410U. It’s an 1080p LED TV, so it’s got the latest tech inside, it’s ultra-thin so it should be able to find a home in even the most cramped of dorm room, but because it’s a slightly older model it’s selling for only $179 at Wal-Mart.
Cheap Headphones
Wanna know one of the greatest dorm offenses? Thinking everyone in your building likes the same music you do. Don’t be that guy or gal who insists on blasting their music as loud as possible just because mom and dad aren’t around! A cheap pair of headphones can be a lifesaver at college. Need some tunes to help you stay up while working late at the library? Just want to drown out the sounds of a noisy dorm? Need something to relax on the way to class?
The Zumreed Headphones are a steal—they sound decent for the price, come in a bunch of styling colors, and while they normally retail for almost $70 you can pick up a pair for only $29 at fab.com during the next week. But be warned, this sale won’t last!
Organize Your Dorm Room
Having the techiest dorm room might mean your place is a hotspot for people who want to come over and play the latest games, listen to music, or even just steal your iPad, but unless you keep it organized you’re going to have people tripping over charging cables and unplugging your devices. I’ve got two products recommendations, both from Quirky.com, that should help you keep those cables under wrap.
The first is the Plug Hub, a deceptively simple little box that keeps your power strip out of site and your cables all neatly tied together. For just $24, it’s a great way to hide that unruly mess of wires behind your desk.
The second is the PowerCurl, a $12 device that attaches to your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro’s MagSafe power adaptor. If you’re constantly moving your Mac between your dorm room, the classroom, a coffee shop, and the library, you know what a pain it can be to constantly be wrapping and unwrapping those cables. The PowerCurl gives you quick and easy access to both ends of the cable, allowing you to quickly unwrap just as much cable as you need, and then makes it easy to tie things back together when you’re done. As an added bonus, it elevates the MagSafe from the ground, which helps keep it cooler to the touch.
College is all about having the right tech. Whether you’re partying with friends or pulling an all nighter, the right laptop, phone, speakers, and even backpack can make a huge difference. Here’s my top five picks for what to bring back to school this year.
