College Tech on a Budget: How to tech out your dorm room without breaking the bank

On the TODAY show this morning, I talked to Al Roker about some ways that college students can save money while still having the latest and greatest tech. From smartphones to ultrabooks and everything in between, today’s students know what’s up. But college budgets don’t usually let you to splurge on every gadget that comes along. I’ve got some great tips on tech’ing out your dorm room and saving money along the way.

Try renting your textbooks

The biggest hit to the college student’s wallet always comes at the start of the semester. Maybe they’ve saved up a bit over the summer washing dishes, but those savings are quickly wiped out at the campus bookstore. Textbook prices are outrageous, but the greatest indignity always comes at the end of the semester when you’re faced with the choice of either selling your book back for a fraction of what you paid or keeping a 10 pound tome around that you never want to see again.

Enter Chegg, a new service that allows you to rent textbooks for a fraction of what you’d pay to buy them. We found that rental prices were often way, way less than what you’d pay to buy the textbook new, with discounts between 50-75% throughout the site.

Budget Televisions

Let’s face it, college students are the last people on earth who need top of the line television sets. But that doesn’t mean they have to suffer either. One very affordable set I like is the 24″ Toshiba 24SL410U. It’s an 1080p LED TV, so it’s got the latest tech inside, it’s ultra-thin so it should be able to find a home in even the most cramped of dorm room, but because it’s a slightly older model it’s selling for only $179 at Wal-Mart.

Cheap Headphones

Wanna know one of the greatest dorm offenses? Thinking everyone in your building likes the same music you do. Don’t be that guy or gal who insists on blasting their music as loud as possible just because mom and dad aren’t around! A cheap pair of headphones can be a lifesaver at college. Need some tunes to help you stay up while working late at the library? Just want to drown out the sounds of a noisy dorm? Need something to relax on the way to class?

The Zumreed Headphones are a steal—they sound decent for the price, come in a bunch of styling colors, and while they normally retail for almost $70 you can pick up a pair for only $29 at fab.com during the next week. But be warned, this sale won’t last!

Organize Your Dorm Room

Having the techiest dorm room might mean your place is a hotspot for people who want to come over and play the latest games, listen to music, or even just steal your iPad, but unless you keep it organized you’re going to have people tripping over charging cables and unplugging your devices. I’ve got two products recommendations, both from Quirky.com, that should help you keep those cables under wrap.

The first is the Plug Hub, a deceptively simple little box that keeps your power strip out of site and your cables all neatly tied together. For just $24, it’s a great way to hide that unruly mess of wires behind your desk.

The second is the PowerCurl, a $12 device that attaches to your MacBook Air or MacBook Pro’s MagSafe power adaptor. If you’re constantly moving your Mac between your dorm room, the classroom, a coffee shop, and the library, you know what a pain it can be to constantly be wrapping and unwrapping those cables. The PowerCurl gives you quick and easy access to both ends of the cable, allowing you to quickly unwrap just as much cable as you need, and then makes it easy to tie things back together when you’re done. As an added bonus, it elevates the MagSafe from the ground, which helps keep it cooler to the touch.

Use Foursquare and get discounts on Back to School

Foursquare is going back to school in a big way! When doing your back to school shopping, be sure to check in and see if you qualify for any offers at the store you’re shopping at. Tons of retailers have lined up to offer discounts to students who check-in for their back-to-school shopping, from clothing to supplies to tech. These deals are different depending on where you are, so be sure to search and see what offers exist in your neighborhood! Here are a few examples of current national back to school deals:

· Best Buy Sync your American Express card with your foursquare account to save $20 off a purchase of $200 or more.

5 Tips for Great Mobile Video

I’ve talked before about the importance of having a solid video strategy, as well how I launched a mobile video web series in 48 hours. While mobile video apps make it easy to shoot and share video, there’s always room for improvement, even if you’re just making quick and dirty videos on your phone or pocket video camera. Here are my top 5 tips to help you make great videos.

1. Don’t think—shoot! While I’m offering some solid tips today, the best thing about mobile video is that as long as you have a smartphone, you’re ready to go! There’s little need to set up and think about your shot. If you have a simple tripod for your smartphone, you can have it set up on your desk and pointed at you, ready to record in a matter of seconds.  …Read More

TODAY: The latest in tech: What to keep and what to toss

What’s in:

1. Ultrabooks with new Ivy Bridge processors – these are a new category of laptops. These laptops are 0.8 inches thick or less, weigh less than 4 pounds and (generally) cost less than $1,000. Plus, they’re designed to wake from sleep in just 2 seconds. But don’t buy the ones with Intels Sandy Bridge processors that’s OUT, buy an Ultrabook with the NEW Ivy Bridge processor that’s IN.  With Windows 8 coming in October some of these Ultrabooks will be touch screen.

2. Apple’s MacBook Pro with Retina Display laptop! This is the hottest laptop out!!!! This laptop has the best screen resolution and even the harshest critics fall in love.

3. Backpacks with built-in charging. Not your average backpack, the Powerbag helps to solve a major problem we all face – battery life. You can charge 4 devices at once.

4. 7 inch tablets! This smaller tablet size category is gaining a lot of momentum & consumer interest. My 2 favorites are the Amazon Kindle Fire & the Asus Nexus 7

5. Warby Parker eyewear. Fashion has gone high tech! You go online pick the 5 frames you like and they’ll ship all 5, you try them on and choose the ones you like, they then fill your prescription and send you the glasses.

What NOT to buy:

off brand Tablets! Buy name brand or end up with a huge doorstop

Netbooks they’re outdated, slow and you’d be better off with a tablet or ultrabook

– Pocket Camcorders! It’s not worth it, especially these days if you have a smartphone that can shoot video.

Avoid Security Holes and Access New Features by Keeping Your Apps Up-to-Date

Finding out about apps to boost your productivity while on-the-go is an increasingly important part of using your smartphone or tablet to better your business. While the default mail, calendar, and web browsing apps your device came equipped with are a good start, specialized apps often mean the difference between being able to work from a conference and having to wait to head back to your hotel. Whether you’re making a move in the mobile video space, trying to build a following on Twitter, or just organizing your digital life, apps can make a world of difference in your mobile productivity.

One often-overlooked feature of apps, however, is the ability to update them. Unfortunately, apps don’t update themselves—you have to manually install new updates. There are a variety of reasons we get behind in updating our apps: limited space on mobile devices, updates that require a WiFi connection, and even just forgetting to check for them. But there are some very good reasons to make sure you’re keeping your apps up-to-date. Read the rest of this article on AT&T’s Networking Exchange blog.

PODCAST: Mobile Invoicing with FreshBooks

On the latest Small Biz Go Mobile podcast I talk about invoicing product FreshBooks, specifically how you can leverage their mobile app to invoice while on-the-go. Running out of funds between pay periods can be devastating to the small business. What’s cool about FreshBooks is that you can quickly access your account from your Google Apps menu (i.e. your Gmail account) so you can track time and submit invoices without ever leaving your inbox. Add new clients, manage your time, and more. Want my full list of tips? Check out the podcast today!

#SocamShow: Live from the @UniqloUSA flagship store in NYC!

This week, Shy and I go crazy about Japanese videogames and Japanese clothes. No place combines these two things quite like UNIQLO, a unique, affordable and very classy Japanese clothing retailer. For instance, did you know that UNIQLO sells an entire line of Metal Gear themed T-Shirts in celebration of the series’ 25th anniversary?

If you’ve never taken a #swag walk through a UNIQLO (or a Wal-Mart, as you’ll see in a video we highlight) then you have to watch this week’s episode of the #SocamShow. And be sure to follow me on Socialcam to catch each episode as it airs every Friday at 3pm!
