Hands-on Look at Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2: The Same Durability, 20% Thinner

At CES we had a chance to meet with Jon Pesansky, a Senior Product Engineer at Corning. Jon was there as part of a large push by Corning to get the word out about Gorilla Glass 2. Many of you are probably already familiar with Gorilla Glass—it can currently be found on a variety of non-Apple smartphones and tablets, including virtually every top-of-the-line Android model. For those that don’t know, Gorilla Glass is a type of glass specially engineered by Corning to withstand a huge amount of stress, far beyond what normal or even tempered glass can withstand. It won’t scratch easily and it won’t shatter when you inevitably drop your phone.

Gorilla Glass 2, the latest incarnation of the glass, is 20% thinner than the current product. That should allow for thinner, sleeker devices to be created with the glass as well as enhanced touch sensitivity from your fingers being closer to the touch sensitivity elements.

To prove Gorilla Glass 2 can stand up to the task, Mr. Pesansky puts it on the workbench to demonstrate just how strong Gorilla Glass 2 really is:

In Mario’s latest video for American Express OPEN Forum, he heads to a car repair business to take a look at how they’re losing time AND money due to a lack of a good technical solution to put a phone and a computer on the work floor. It’s not as easy a problem to solve since it requires some rugged tech that can take the grease and damage mechanics are bound to inflict on a poor PC. While most rugged solutions can cost several thousands of dollars, Mario finds a solution to help this business for under $500! Check out the video and be sure to spread the word to other business owners you know where rugged tech could make a difference.

Livescribe Echo Smartpen is the coolest business tool

For the last week I’ve been using a Livescibe Echo smartpen, and I flat-out love it.  When Livescribe gave me their 8gb version to demo, I have to admit I was dubious at first; I spend a lot of time banging away on a keyboard, and I was pretty sure that the pen and the pad were going the way of the dodo.  Man, was I wrong.

First, the basics: the Echo smartpen digitally captures your handwritten and audio notes, the combination of which is a ‘pencast’.  Basically, when you tap the “record” area of the specially printed paper, everything that you write (and the sounds associated with it) are recorded.  You can transfer files from the pen and share your recorded notes with others, and you can also tap any section of your notes and hear what was recorded when you were writing the note.  Livescribe makes it incredibly easy to share your pencasts with others as it automatically hooks up to your email, Google Docs, Evernote, Facebook, Mobile (iPhone and iPad) and/or MyLivescribe (an online storage space for pencasts). Some Tips for Staying Safe with your Digital Wallet

Mobile wallets are a hot topic right now, and the #1 question people keep asking is if they’re safe. The short answer, YES they are safe!

But how do I know that you’ll be safe? Because your credit cards are credit cards, no matter if they’re in your real wallet or your digital wallet. With MasterCard handling the transactions, you’ve got the same protections if someone gets ahold of your smartphone and starts making fraudulent purchases as you do with your ‘real’ credit card. You can report a card as being stolen the same way you do now—just because it’s stored inside a digital wallet doesn’t mean it’s any less safe! Read More

To combat Apple’s iCloud offering for iOS 5 users, the Box.net cloud storage service has announced its “50gigs for 50 days” promotion for anybody who downloads the latest version of the mobile to their iPhone or iPad.

All of them have free storage offerings as a basic package (2-5GB). Anything after that, you have to opt for a paid personal or business plan that start around $10/month, or refer a ton of people to get additional free storage in smaller megabyte increments. Overwhelmed by Email? Wish you could just turn it off? There’s an app for that

If you’ve seen Mario speak recently, then you’ve probably heard him talk about AwayFind, the service that helps you put an end to checking your email every few minutes. AwayFind’s revolutionary service for Gmail and businesses who get their email through Google Apps helps you to stop checking you email every five minutes and set alerts to only let the urgent messages come through.

Basically, here’s how it works: you set rules to indicate what email is urgent, whether it’s from the boss or matches certain text for a project you’re working on. Since you won’t be checking your email anymore, those urgent messages can be delivered to you through a variety of new ways like text messages, instant messenger, or even a phone call that reads your email to you.
